If you have a dream then chase it! You may not have obtained the entry requirements for your dream course but that doesn’t mean you can’t get there. There are many pathways you can follow to gain entry to the university and degree of your choice.

CONTINUING EDUCATION
(Certificates & Diplomas)

Before you start
There are a vast number of continuing eduction service providers throughout Australia. Which one you select depends on what you wish to achieve. UNIS deals exclusively with education that assists people enter University – having said this, certificates and diplomas are also useful for preparing students for immediate work. A further benefit of shorter certificate courses is it allows the student to get a feel for what’s involved in a given field before committing to a lengthy University degree. Many of these courses are available in the evenings for people who work as well as on part-time and full-time schedules.

Another important consideration before committing to further education is whether the course and institution is accredited (recognised) by employers and universities. Most certificate courses are open to all people, regardless of previous academic history, and act as entry devices into diploma courses. The diploma can then often be used as credit towards a university bachelors degree. Sound good so far? Then read on…

It can be a bit daunting looking at the internet search results of education service providers. While many are very good, prospective students should ensure the qualifications they offer are industry recognised before committing themselves financially. Perhaps one of the safest and easiest pathways to consider is the government administered TAFE. Many TAFE courses also attract AUSstudy payments but be sure to ask about this when making your inquiries.

Courses offered by TAFE include:

  • Arts, fashion, design and entertainment
  • Auto, mining, construction and engineering
  • Business, finance and IT
  • Community services, health and beauty
  • Environment and science
  • General education and training
  • Hospitality, travel and tourism
  • Health services and nursing
  • Sport and recreation
  • Animal care veterinary nursing
  • Language, literacy and numeracy
*This list is subject to change so check availability in your State – see links below

Many of these subjects are available in a variety of programmes such as short-courses, certificates and diplomas, many of which are fully accredited by the workplace and universities.  Scholarships are also available for a variety of socio-demographic groups (you’ve got to be in it to win it, so have a go!). Below are a few useful links to get you started on your path to higher education and your dream job.
